Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the world was becoming more aware of the destructive effects of industry (31)______ the environment and people were starting to think seriously about ways of protecting the environment. One man who was particularly affected by this subject was Gerard Morgan-Grenville. As Morgan-Grenville travelled round earning his living as a gardener, he noticed signs of the damage that was being done to the countryside around him. It wasn't long before Morgan-Grenville decided that he had to do something about this situation. He felt that if people could be shown a better way of living then maybe they would be interested enough to try to protect their (32)_____ environment. Mr. Morgan-Grenville decided to set up a project (33) ______ would prove what was happening to our surroundings and what could be done about it. So, in 1975, Morgan-Grenville created the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in a village in Wales. The main aim of CAT is to search for an ecologically better way of living by using technology which (34) _____ no harm to the environment. One of the most important things CAT did initially was to explore and demonstrate a wide range of techniques and to point out which ones had the least destructive results on the world around us. (35)____, CAT provides information and advice to people all over Britain and all over the world. If more and more individuals are informed about how much damage our modern lifestyle is causing to the planet, maybe more of them would be prepared to look for practical solutions to environmental problems.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
If any of the inmates at Yancheng prison are considering an escape attempt, they’d better do it soon. The Chinese prison is currently wrapping up months of construction on a new “smart” surveillance system designed to monitor prisoners at every moment, including while they are in their cells. According an official, this will make prison breaks virtually impossible — but it might also wreak havoc on prisoners’ psyches.
According to the South China Morning Post, the facility is almost finished installing a network of cameras and sensors capable of constantly tracking inmates. These cameras and sensors will feed into an AI system that uses facial identification and movement analysis technologies to monitor each individual inmate at the Chinese prison, producing a daily report about each one and flagging any unusual behavior. “For instance,” project representative Meng Qingbiao told SCMP, “if an inmate has been spotted pacing up and down in a room for some time, the machine may regard the phenomenon as suspicious and suggest close-up checks with a human guard.”
This isn’t the first example we’ve seen of prison officials attempting to make facilities “smart”. In February, Hong Kong’s Correctional Services Department announced the implementation of several technologies designed to help prisoners stay safe during their imprisonment. However, Zhang Xuemin, a physiology professor at Beijing Normal University, told SCMP the new system will “definitely affect” the prisoners’ mental state. And while he didn’t elaborate on what that effect might be, past research has shown that constant surveillance can increase a person’s stress and anxiety levels, while decreasing their trust in others — meaning the trade off for an escape-proof “smart” prison might be the mental health of its inmates.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
If you’re like many Americans, you’re probably consuming far more sugar than you realize. Much of this sugar comes in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, which the food industry began adding to virtually all processed foods in the 1970s. This was back when the consumption of fat was first linked to heart disease. With the best of intentions, the food industry reduces the fat content in many processed foods. Unfortunately, low-fat foods taste like cardboard, so the food industry added high fructose corn syrup to make them “tasty” once more. As a result, while the consumption of table sugar has gone down, the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup has skyrocketed. The problem is that research now links sugar consumption in any form to a host of health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Some researchers are going so far as to label sugar “toxic.”
Recent studies at the University of California, Davis, show that when a person consumes too much sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and converts some of it into fat. Some of that fat ends up in the bloodstream and helps generate an especially dangerous kind of cholesterol called small dense LDL. These LDL particles are known to lodge in blood vessels, form plaque, and cause heart attacks. In addition, sugar has become a major focus in cancer research, researchers are finding that sugar consumption causes a sudden spike in the hormone insulin, which can serve as a catalyst to fuel certain types of cancers, including those of the breasts and colon.
Think that you can satisfy your sweet tooth by consuming artificial sweeteners? Think again. A study of rats that were fed artificially sweetened food found that their metabolism slowed down, and they were triggered to consume more calories and gain more weight than rats fed sugar-sweetened food. Similarly, people who consume diet drinks regularly have a 200 percent increased risk of weight gain, a 36 percent increased risk of pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and a 67 percent increased risk of diabetes.
What to do? An American Heart Association report recommends that men should consume no more than 150 calories of added sugars a day, and women should consume just 100 calories. That’s less than the amount in one can of soda.
