History of the Louvre

The Louvre, in Paris, France, is one of the largest museums in the world. It has almost 275,000 works of art, which are displayed in over 140 exhibition rooms. The Louvre contains some of the most famous works of art in the history of the world including Q1 the Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci and the Venus de Milo by Michelangelo.

The Louvre is ordinarily celebrated for its vast collection of artwork, and also it Q2 has a long and interesting history as a building. It was originally a fort built by King Phillip sometime around 1200 A.D. In the 1300s, it became a royal residence for Charles V, who had it renovated to accommodate his lavish taste. This majestic building remained empty until 1527, when Francois I decided then Q4 he wanted it for his private residence. Francois I was a collector of early Italian Renaissance art when he moved into the Louvre, and already owned the Mona Lisa, as well as paintings by Titian and Raphael.
